Greetings Family Law Reform Members:

We need you to Contact Governor Rick Scott NOW:

WE HAVE CLEARED OUR LAST COMMITTEE!

This past Tuesday we received a favorable vote from the Senate Appropriates Committee, where, as expected, our opposition was chomping at the bit to convince our Senators to vote it down. Our State Senators were respectful and listened to much of the excellent testimony offered, including my own. Once again, many thanks to those members who made the trek to Tallahassee to offer their stories!

Senator Tom Lee summed it up by stating, “Current statues make millions of dollars for the people litigating the issues, and it’s not been designed by the people who pay those fees. We are trying to bring more certainty to this process … and give judges the latitude that they need…for unique cases.”  In the end, we had 13 yeas, and 6 Nays.

Thank you to all of my Family Law Reform Members for the confidence you have placed in me, for supporting those Legislators who have always supported us, and for not listening to those few misguided individuals within our organization who would rather divide us, than unify us. By your efforts, Senator Lee modified his time-sharing language so that SB 668 could be positioned in the House for a floor vote.

That said, I would like to personally thank Senator Lee for loosening the language with his amendment that allowed for time sharing without a presumption.

What happens now?

SB 668 is headed to floor votes in the House and Senate. Senators Lee and Kelli Stargel will help chaperon the bill through the Senate any day now. Once passed by a floor vote there, it will then go to the House where Representatives Ritch Workman and Colleen Burton will take up the baton. We expect lively debate and discussion once more, but we believe it will pass and head to the Governor’s desk for his signature.

NOW IS CRUNCH TIME!!

Once again the Family Section of the Florida Bar has opposed our bill, even though the time sharing language does not contain a rebuttable presumption. They have already written Governor Scott asking him to, once again, VETO our bill.

The National Organization of Women (NOW) is opposed to our bill and will also demand that Governor Scott Veto the bill.

One more time, I must ask you——If you want alimony reform—-to:

CONTACT GOVERNOR SCOTT NOW RESPECTFULLY ASKING THAT HE SUPPORT ALIMONY REFORM AND SIGN SB 668 INTO LAW.

We have to be louder and more persistent than ever!!

Don’t wait!  Do this now and continue to do this on a daily basis until our bill is signed into law.  We need to show Governor Scott just what a force we can be. Here’s how:
